What is a Christian Science Practitioner?
All students of Christian Science study the Bible and Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures daily and pray for themselves often. Some students will occasionally pray for others when requested, but in order to be able to call themselves a Christian Science practitioner, a student must devote full-time to the healing practice, and have a record of successful healing of others.
Christian Science treatment includes no diagnosis or physical contact with the patient. Practitioners often meet with patients in person, however the most common mode of communication and consultation is by telephone.
Christian Scientists have been relying on their own prayers and the work of practitioners for many generations. Records of verified accounts of healings dating back to the late 1800s are available for reading in Christian Science Reading Rooms. Current copies of the Christian Science Sentinel and the Christian Science Journal, which include contemporary accounts of healings, are also available at Reading Rooms or by subscription. In addition, several collections of such accounts have been published in book form. They include A Century of Christian Science Healing; Healing Spiritually: Renewing Your Life Through the Power of God's Law; and Spiritual Healing in a Scientific Age. These books are available at Christian Science Reading Rooms.
A directory of Christian Science practitioners, listed by location and telephone number, is published monthly in the Christian Science Journal. Practitioners work with the general public as well as church members and would be happy to speak with you at any time. Please note that practitioners sustain themselves with this work, so they do charge for their services.
